Iron comes in two forms, iron ore and iron. Iron ore is mined from iron Mines and is processed into Iron in iron ore processing plants. Both are aggregates and are transported as such.
Iron ore
Iron ore is a resource in Workers & Resources. Iron ore is produced in iron mines. Iron ore is produced at 4 tons of ore per worker per work day.
Iron ore alone is not very profitable if exported in its raw form.
Iron
Iron is a resource in Workers & Resources. Iron is produced by the iron ore processing plant. The processing plant takes iron ore and processes it into iron that can be used to make steel or export for more money. An iron ore processing plant can process maximum of 225t of Ore when on maximum efficiency, with 15 workers. In this case it produces 105t of iron per workday. It means conversion ratio iron ore:iron is 2.14 : 1
You can set up your ore mines and processors many different ways, but it is always better to "do the math" when planning infrastructure. Plan based off of what you need the ore for. Counting from the end consumer (i.e. Steel mill) is advisable.
