Infrastructure refers to the basic systems and services that the republic needs in order to function properly.
Background
Infrastructure refers to the basic systems and services that a country or organization needs in order to function properly. For a whole nation, it includes all the physical systems such as the road and railway networks, utilities, sewage, water, telephone lines and cell towers, air control towers, bridges, etc., plus services including law enforcement, emergency services, healthcare, education, etc.
The term infrastructure first appeared in the late 1880s, derived from French, with infra- meaning below and structure meaning building. Infrastructure can mean the foundation upon which the structure of an economy is built.
Infrastructure is often defined as hard or soft. Hard infrastructure is the tangible, physical assembly of structures such as roads, bridges, tunnels, and railways. Soft infrastructure is the services required to maintain the economic, health, and social needs of a population.
