Water and Sewage are optional features and are only available when Water Management is enabled in game settings.
Background
Sewerage refers to the infrastructure that conveys sewage. It encompasses components such as receiving drains, manholes, pumping stations, storm overflows, and screening chambers of the sanitary sewer. Sewerage ends at the entry to a sewage treatment plant or at the point of discharge into the environment. In loose American English usage, the terms "sewerage" and "sewage" are sometimes used interchangeably.
Gameplay
When Water management is enabled in the game settings, the players republic will begin to generate wastewater. Wastewater must be collected and disposed of. The disposal of wastewater is possible by dumping it in a river or lake or by exporting it to a customs house at a certain fee.
General
Wastewater disposal
wastewater can be dumped in a river or lake with help of a sewage discharge. The sewage discharge has three input connections to connect with sewage pipes of any size. Another option to dispose the wastewater is by exporting the wastewater to a customs house. At the customs house the player has to pay a fee for exporting.
Wastewater quality
The quality of the wastewater is under influence of the building where the wastewater is being produced. The lower the '% Sewage pollution', the less polluted the wastewater is.
Before the player disposes the wastewater into a river or lake, the player has the ability to treat the wastewater in a sewage treatment plant and turn it over into polluted water. The player can control the quality of the water in the sewage treatment plant. In this plant the wastewater is treated with chemicals to become water which is polluted, with a maximum water quality of 85%.
Distribution
Wastewater must be collected throughout the republic for buildings to function. This can be done through small, medium, big sewage pipes or with a sewage truck. Big sewage pipes can transport more wastewater over longer distances. Medium sewage pipes can transport less wastewater. And small sewage pipes transport the least wastewater over distance. The player can join sewage pipes using sewage switches. Contrary to the name, sewage switches cannot switch on or off wastewater, and are only an interconnection between sewage pipes.
When using a sewage truck the player must use a sewage loading/unloading station to handle wastewater and the sewage truck must be stationed at the technical services building. The sewage loading/unloading station has multiple water connections for pipes of any size.
Wastewater can be collected from buildings by using a sewage tank. You can connect one sewage pipe to a sewage tank of any size. How far away a sewage tank can be placed from a building depends of the terrain height in the environment. If the sewage tank is at an lower height than the building, the distance increases. The larger the difference in height between sewage tank and building the more the distance is increased.
With help of a sewage pump the player can pump wastewater from a lower height to a higher height.
Each worker produces a little under 1 m^3 of sewage per day.
How to connect sewage
In the image below is displayed an example how the player can interconnect sewage related buildings. This is not an complete overview, but only showing how things can be connected. It's all up to the player's fantasy en need how to connect everything up to get a proper working sewer system.
The sewage pumps are optional and the placement of sewage pumps is related to the terrain height in the world. The player places sewage pumps to pump sewer over a hill. When the player daisy chains sewage pumps, very high heights can be overcome, but this comes with high costs.
Notes
- Normal wastewater dynamics work, meaning gravity disposal sewage works, so the wastewater flows downhill, not uphill.
- The sewage pipes in the game require a proper slope due to normal wastewater dynamics.
Sewage treatment
A sewage treatment plant is a destination where wastewater (water which is no longer fit for its current purpose) moves to once it leaves buildings. The wastewater flows to the treatment plant for processing through sewage pipes or delivered with a sewage truck. Ultraviolet lamps are used, they emit UV light which destroys the DNA of bacteria and, apart from that, chemicals such as chlorine are used to destroy microorganisms.

The desired water quality, after treatment, can be configured from the sewage treatment plant. The default and maximum setting is 85%, this means that water leaving the Water treatment plant is still polluted. When there are no workers at the sewage treatment plant, the plant stops processing Wastewater, wastewater collects in the sewage pipes, they clog and the citizens can get sick. |

Sewage discharge is a structure that disposes wastewater quickly. It dumps sewage in a river or lake without requiring any type of treatment. The sewage discharge needs to be built partially on water and partially on soil. |

A sewage tank is placed for the local collection of Wastewater from the surrounding buildings. How far away a sewage tank can be placed from a building depends on the terrain height in the environment. A sewage tank needs to be placed at the same height as a building, but it's better to place the sewage tank at a lower height. The larger the difference in height between sewage tank and building the more the distance is increased. If the sewage tank is at a higher height than the building, the sewage tank will NOT collect Wastewater. |
