Mercury was the last major colony to be established. Founded in 2199, it was originally conceived as a military training facility due to the extreme heat and cold inherent to the tidally locked inner planet. Over the decades soldiers that graduated from the planet became known as "Spartans". During the First Colonial War of 2238 Mercury became the sixth planet to sign the Inner System Defense Treaty (ISDT) contributing skilled Spartan battalions to the alliance.
