Custom game mode has different rules and mechanics from story mode.


Mechanics

Custom game mode lets you play on some premade maps with different colonies and settings. Your settings can be saved for later replays or shared among friends.

Custom games can be saved for later continuation. Autosaving is also available.

You can bring your story-mode colonies into custom game mode. Later changes to story-mode save files doesn't affect existing custom-game-mode save files.


Freeplay

Freeplay is the main focus of custom game mode. It lets you control various settings of each game: victory conditions, maps, environmental difficulty, playable colonies, landmarks, swarm creature options and behaviors.

Specific settings and mechanics will be shown in the respective pages.


Skirmish

Skirmish only lets you fight quick games against other colonies on preset maps. It simulates how you play story levels and extra levels.

  • Victory condition is Conquest. Difficulty increases near victory.
  • Upkeep is enabled.
  • Nest invasion is enabled.
  • Environmental difficulty is medium. Starting difficulty is 10%. Increasing pattern is Ramp.
  • Enemy infighting is disabled.
  • Fog of war is disabled.
  • Cavern and landmark randomization is disabled.
  • Surface enemies are approriate to the environment.
  • Most exclusive map options are disabled. Long flood is enabled if you play on Imprisoned. Altenate nest location is randomly enabled if you play on Strawclutch.
