Background

Some Communists believe that organized religion (churches, mosques etc., hierarchies, priests, religious colleges) is a plot by the aristocracy, the capitalist powers that be, to keep the people in subjection. Theoretical Communism has no objection to your having a faith at home. But as soon as you get together in more than a family group, they feel that the resultant group is a threat to "the people" and the Revolution of the Proletariat.

In accordance with that belief, if they find that they cannot suppress a religious belief, they co-opt it instead, making sure that the religious hierarchy is approved of, and if possible indoctrinated by them.

In practice, no less than in theory, communism is incompatible with religious faith. The tactic of the Communist Party prescribes for the members of the party definite lines of conduct. The moral code of every religion in like manner prescribes for the faithful some definite line of conduct. A communist who rejects the commandments of religion and acts in accordance with the directions of the party, ceases to be one of the faithful. On the other hand, one who, while calling himself a communist, continues to cling to his religious faith, one who in the name of religious commandments infringes the prescriptions of the party, ceases thereby to be a communist.

Religion was seen as a hindrance to a thriving socialist society.

Gameplay

The player is not able to build churches in-game. When the player downloads a map, a church is only present if the map maker has added one or more churches. Churches can only be made when the player selected the Build cities or Build cities and roads option when starting a new game using the random map or selecting a map that has towns with churches.

The religious sympathy can be eliminated using TV stations or radio stations and broadcasting anti-religious propaganda.

Religious sympathy will stay at zero or very low using propaganda, but if immigrants are invited to live in your republic, they will come with a level of religious sympathy, which the player will need to continue broadcasting to eliminate.
